The dengue death rate in Sri Lanka is 0.3 percent at the moment and it is expected to decrease further to 0.1 percent by 2016, a Health Ministry spokesperson said.

"People have shown a resistance to the first type of dengue virus that exists in Sri Lanka. But the second type of dengue virus is now spreading in other countries posing a threat to Sri Lanka again," the spokesperson added.

Immediate medical attention from a state hospital or a qualified doctor for any type of fever is the only way of avoiding complications and death, he added.

Govt. wary of revealing dengue death toll

The Epidemiology Unit (EU) of the Health Ministry yesterday said that over 23,565 dengue cases had been reported from the beginning of the year to date. The Unit?s website revealed that 586 cases had been reported from the beginning of the month to date. It however hid the death toll.

The highest number of cases reported was from Colombo (7,175), Gampaha (2,704), Kurunegala (2,396), Matale (1,420), Kalutara (1,349), Ratnapura (1,491), Puttalam (760), Galle (676) and Kegalle (905).

The EU said that the dengue peak had been witnessed during the months of May and June this year. ( in reality, 5 out of the other 6 months of the year so far were higher than May / June - Ro)

High risk of dengue is announced from ten districts

The Health Ministry has announced Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Kurunegala, Puttlam, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Kalutara as ten districts with high risk of dengue.

27 M O H divisions have been nominated as high risk areas.

The Health Ministry says that there is a increase of 47% in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts.

Sri Lankan Partners Open Molecular Lab for Dengue Research

The University of Ruhuna in Galle, Sri Lanka has opened its doors to a new infectious diseases reference lab, the latest milestone resulting from a growing collaboration with the Duke Global Health Institute and Duke-NUS.

The lab, which supplements the existing clinical lab at the University of Ruhuna, came out of a recognized need to build upon the university?s research and laboratory capacity. As development occurs in the region, the area is seeing more frequent outbreaks of dengue and other debilitating emerging infections.

?The backbone of DGHI?s partnership with the University of Ruhuna is a focus on capacity-building,? said Chris Woods, infectious diseases researcher and lead collaborator on this project from DGHI. ?Our goal was to collectively leverage our resources, both capital and intellectual, that focus on the leading health problem in that region -- dengue. The new lab takes us a step further toward addressing that and other needs.?

The fully-equipped laboratory includes modern lab equipment and diagnostic tools to study the origin and transmission of emerging infections, including the ELISA test and thermocycler. Securing lab space, obtaining the equipment, and training of lab techs took time, but all three partners together made it happen.

Dengue deaths on the decrease, says Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health notes that the percentage of deaths caused due to dengue has fallen to 0.3 percent.The ministry said that the number of Dengue patients within the past ten months during the year has decreased.
A total of 25,022 Dengue patients have been reported during the past few months of this year.
The Ministry of Health said that comparing with the previous year, a downfall of 10,000 patients have been recorded.Forty-eight (48) percent of the dengue patients are recorded from the Western Province.

Sterile males to tackle war against dengue

The latest weapon that Sri Lankan authorities are to brandish against the deadly dengue-carrying female mosquitoes is sterile males. The Sterile Insect Technique to prevent mosquito breeding is to be introduced next year (2014), the Sunday Times learns.

Under the ?Sterile Insect Technique?, laboratory-bred male mosquitoes which have been rendered sterile through irradiation will be introduced to the environment to mate with female dengue mosquitoes in the wild, said Prof. W. Abeyewickreme, Professor in Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and Chairman of the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) who is coordinating this programme.

Such mating will not bring forth any larvae, he pointed out. This programme is being carried out by the Molecular Medicine Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, the Anti-Malaria Campaign (AMC), the ITI and the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) in collaboration with Austria?s Insect Pest Control Laboratory in Seibersdorf.

Attendants want probe into colleague?s dengue death

Claim leave refused and also not admitted to ICU

A section of the staff of the Colombo National Hospital is calling for a full investigation into the death of one their colleauges whose request for leave had been turned down while suffering from dengue and died as a result.

At least 40 staff members this week came to show their wrath when female attendant Deepika Priyadarshini Karaliyedda (28) of ward 30 died of dengue after she was not approved leave when she made an application.Earlier this week they held a protest in front of the hospital.

Given the fact that the number of haemorrhagic cases has increased by a factor of 8, it is remarkable that Sri Lanka has, by official figures, cut its fatality rate in half. Sadly, I have doubts about those official figures. - Ro

Number of Dengue Hemorrhagic fever on the rise

(Colombo Lankapuvath) There is a rapid increase in the number of dengue hemorrhagic patients in the country, with the wide spread of the disease island wide, the Director of Lady Dr Rathnasiri Hewage.

The numbers have comparatively increased than last year while the virus is now fast spreading in India where there are possibilities it reaching Sri Lanka too.

The number of dengue inflicted children admitted to the hospital last year are 3722 while 49 out of them were dengue hemorrhagic and 14 patients passed away, the Hospital said.

Over 2900 children have been admitted with Dengue within the last 10 months while out of them 420 were of the hemorrhagic stage.
