Over 4,000 dengue cases reported

Over 4,000 cases of dengue have been reported island-wide during the first week of this month alone, Health Ministry officials said last week.

Health ministry sources stated that nine persons have died so far, and the number of patients and deaths could increase within the next few weeks.

Last year out of the 44,000 infected, 227 have died of the disease and the highest number of patients was reported from the Kurunegala District.

National Dengue Prevention Week from 6-13 February

Ministry of Health has decided to declare a National Dengue Prevention Week due to a risk in dengue epidemic situation that might spread around the island in February and March.

Comment: The fatality figures were removed on July 25th 2012 (way to pay attention Sri Lankan media!). Not only were the figures removed for the current year, but also for previous years. They were done at a time when dengue cases and deaths were increasing rapidly, but various ministry spokesmen were minimizing the risk in what turned out to be a record year for Dengue in Sri Lanka. Since no official figure of fatalities has been released for last year, it allows ministry officials to, to put it bluntly, lie about how successful last year's dengue eradication campaign was. - Ro

The highest number of mosquito breeding places found during the mosquito control week which commenced last Wednesday (06) were in the Western Province, Ratnapura and Kurunegala districts. Secretary of the Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL), Senarath Bandara said yesterday that legal action had been taken against 611 persons countrywide for having mosquito breeding places in their premises.

The Sri Lanka Epidemiology unit website stated that the number of dengue cases from the beginning of January to date was 4,031. The highest numbers have been reported from Colombo (960), Gampaha (499), Kurunegala (836), Kalutara (202) and Kandy (181).

The Number of cases reported from the Colombo City limits was 385. However the website had expunged the death toll.

Health Ministry sources said that the data had been erased owing to the undue attention paid to the number of deaths.

Dengue surges in Kurunegala

Wayamba Provincial Health Campaign Medical Specialist, Dr. Ajith Weerakoon, said dengue is on the increase, in the Kurunegala District, though the mosquito-borne viral disease is on the decline in other parts of the country compared to the situation in the previous years.


Dr. Weerakoon was addressing government officers and heads of local bodies in the Wayamba Province, and discussed ways and means of combating the dengue menace. Revealing statistics collated in this regard, he said in the first 40 days of 2013, there were 713 cases reported while five of them had died. He also said that in the same period, in the Puttalam District, 148 cases of dengue had been reported including two deaths.

One thing that surprised me during my short stay in Sri Lanka is the way the general public keep the fear factor at bay when it comes to Dengue: they have accepted the fact that avoiding mosquito bites is next to impossible no matter where you live in; they get on with their lives with come what may attitude; in short, they have accepted that Dengue is something that they have to live with for the foreseeable future
