So Colombo's CFR this year is running at about .45%. This is higher by half than the government's claim of 0.3% nationally. One might expect that rural patients would fare worse. Conversely, Colombo hospitals might be the last port of call for seriously ill patients leading to an artificially high cfr. Impossible to say for sure unless the govt releases legitimate fatality data. - Ro



Construction sites blamed for dengue rise

The Colombo Municipal Council?s Public Health Department (PHD) yesterday said that the large number of construction sites in the city had led to a high incidence of dengue.

PHD Chief Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that 380 suspected dengue cases had been reported so far this month. He said that 3,280 suspected dengue cases had been reported since the beginning of the year. The city?s dengue death toll had risen from eight to 15 within the last few weeks, he said.

The most recent dengue outbreaks had been reported from Mattakkuliya, Mahawatte and Wanathamulla, Dr. Kariyawasam said.

The figure of 178 Dengue fatalities in 2012 has an interesting evolution. Originally 264 fatalities were reported, this was whittled down gradually to 220, then 200 before finally landing on 178. In the process the figures become somewhat unbelievable. On June 20th, 2012, 75 fatalities were reported from 12,336 cases (cfr 0.61% . The final official tally for the year was 178 deaths from 44,214 cases. In other words the official cfr dropped to .32% for the second half of the year. In comparison, the cfr in 2010 was 0.72% and 2011 0.65%. I consider it very unlikely that there was such a significant reduction in cfr in the latter half of 2012 especially when the MOH officially stopped reporting fatalities at that time.

This latest media report on figures for 2013 is interesting. Continuing 2012's practice, the ministry did not report fatalities in 2013, but did repeatedly report a cfr of .3%. This latest report (below) gives 78 fatalities from 27,991 cases - a cfr of 0.28%. How believable is this figure? The epidemiological unit tally of cases is 31,825 - 14% higher than the figure quoted. We have very limited fatality data for 2013 beyond the ministry figures, but in Colombo media reports tell us that 17 deaths occurred from 3,590 cases (0.47% cfr). I suspect that the reported overall fatality figure is low and that the true number of fatalities is likely somewhere around 130. - Ro

Dengue cases dropped by 32 % : Health Ministry

The Cabinet was this week informed that the number of Dengue patients were reduced more than 30 per cent last year, compared to the previous year.

The Health Ministry informed the cabinet that although dengue menace had marked a considerable hike in most of the Asian countries in 2013 compared to past few years, Sri Lanka could curb the disease owing to the measures taken by the Health ministry in collaboration with regional authorities.

Accordingly compared to 40,823 of dengue patients reported in the year 2012, government could reduce the number up to 27,991 in 2013 which is a reduction of 32%. And the dengue death toll was brought down to 78 in 2013 which was 178 in 2012.

So many statistics in this couple of lines, so few of them correct! Using Epidemiology unit figures - Cases - 2012:44,456; 2013: 31,861 - a reduction of 28%.
I see the ministry reported fatality figure of 78 for 2013 is already being reduced to 70.
I would be the first to applaud Sri Lanka for improving its treatment of Dengue cases and certainly some strides have been taken in that direction this year. There is, however, a lack of transparency and a history of hiding the true stats that leaves me dubious of government produced figures. - Ro


99.7% of dengue patients had recovered

The Health Ministry officials say that 31,292 dengue patients who were hospitalized last year had recovered after treatment.

It is reported that during last year 70 patients were died and it was 182 in 2012. Accordingly, 99.7% patients were recovered.

It is reported that 47,000 patients were hospitalized in 2012, and comparing to that in 2013 there is a reduction of 52%.

Only 4,531 dengue patients have been reported from the country this year. The number of dengue deaths was 10. The dengue death rate is as low as 0.22 percent, Health Ministry Secretary Dr.Nihal Jayatilleke said.

According to Dr. Jayatilleke, the number of dengue patients reported in last year was 32,000. There were 89 dengue deaths. The dengue death rate was 0.28 percent. There were 44,461 dengue cases in 2012, which was the highest number of recorded dengue cases resulting in 181 deaths. The death rate was 0.4 percent, he said.
