Alarming Dengue statistics from Colombo

Health Services Director of the Colombo District Dr. Thilak Siriwardene noted that there is an increase in the number of Dengue cases being reported from the Colombo District.

He noted that in comparison with the values recorded in March 2012 the number of Dengue cases reported last month has seen an increase of 100%.

Dr. Thilak Siriwardene added that over the past three months, three fatalities have been reported due to Dengue.

Drastic drop in dengue patients

Only 30 dengue patients have been reported in 2013, while the number of dengue cases reported during the corresponding period last year was 10,000. There is a drastic drop in the number of dengue deaths when compared to previous years.

The reason behind this is measures taken by the Health Ministry to manage dengue, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.

Dr. Mahipala said the Health Ministry is now focusing on reducing the number of dengue deaths. A lot of had work has already been done in connection with this. A blood report can be now be obtained within 30 minutes in order to check whether a patient has dengue.

The number of dengue patients has increased in the Kurunegala District and the ?Ward No. 1? of the Kurunegala Hospital is teeming with patients, sources said.

The elementary cure for this particular disease is bed-rest, but due to the unprecedented increase in dengue patients, two patients are sharing one bed, a doctor attached to the hospital said. By the end of March, within a short span of three months this year, seven dengue patients in the Kurunegala District have died, and the dengue patients reportedly totalled 1,240, according to the Kurunegala health authorities.

The Ministry of Health states that 29 persons died due to the Dengue Virus so far this year.

Dr. Paba Palihawadana, Director of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health says that 10,673 Dengue patients have been reported over the past four months.

A majority of cases have been reported from the Colombo, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts.

Around 11,000 people have been diagnosed with dengue while 34 deaths due to the disease have been reported within the first four months of this year alone.
