Dengue deaths cut down drastically

The Health Ministry had been able to cut down the number of dengue patients drastically. During the first half of June, 92 dengue deaths were reported, but this year only 44 dengue deaths have been reported for the past six months. Health Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake said.

According to Deputy Minister, the ministry was able to achieve this significant improvement of a 50 percent decrease of dengue deaths due to the advanced treatment and specialized foreign training provided to health staff with the assistance of Thailand.

It is hard to believe this report. The ministry is not releasing official fatality figures, but some media reports still give regional cases & deaths. For example Kurunegala district (post #59) 7 fatalities from 1,800 patients (0.39% cfr) and Colombo (post #57) 8 fatalities from 1,459 patients (0.55% cfr). If the Deputy Minister is to be believed, only 29 fatalities resulted from the other 14,018 cases (0.21% cfr). - Ro

The Colombo Municipal Council Public Health Department along with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) and the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) recently launched a cutting-edge social media system titled ?Mo-Buzz? aimed at dengue prevention in and around Colombo.

The system will thus empower people to report dengue symptoms, mosquito bites and breeding sites using a simple text form or pictures or videos sent through their smartphones. All such reports will be automatically geo-tagged according to the user?s location and displayed on live Google maps. This will help health authorities stay apprised of the spread of dengue in real time and accordingly allocate health resources to areas that need the quickest attention.

In addition, the system will automatically process historic weather and dengue incidence data using a computer simulation to generate predictive hotspot maps that forewarn the public and health authorities where and when dengue might occur. As soon as an area on the map is identified as an hotspot either through the algorithm or the citizen reports, an alert and health education messages can be sent to residents in that area.

World's No 1 Dengue treatment centre opened in Lanka

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena in conversation with a patient having opened the Centre for Clinical Management of Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Economic Development Minister Basil Rjapaksa opened what is billed to be the world's best centre for Clinical Management of Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) at the Negombo Base Hospital built at a cost of Rs. 59 million yesterday, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman said this centre is to be named the Collaboration Centre for Dengue by WHO during its Convention on Dengue which will take place in Colombo next month.

New anti-dengue mosquito variety identified in Sri Lanka

July 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Medical Research Institute (MRI) announced today that scientists of the institute have discovered two new mosquito varieties in the country.

The mosquito is similar to Aedes Aegypti that spreads dengue but the new mosquito relishes the larvae of the dengue mosquito and the MRI believes that its spread may control the population of dengue mosquitoes.

Health Ministry spokesman yesterday warned of a possible DV2 dengue outbreak in the country.

The Spokesman was quoted as saying the following :"A DV2 outbreak was reported from India and several countries in the region. Therefore, there is a possibility of Sri Lanka being affected. The public needs to be vigilant about all types of mosquito breeding sites inside and outside buildings.These sites should be destroyed as soon as they are discovered. Destroying mosquito breeding sites is the only successful method of controlling the mosquito density."

Dengue in Sri Lanka: Topomiya mosquito has ?disappeared?

When scientists from the Medical Research Institute announced in July that they had discovered a new breed of mosquito that could help to control the spread of dengue in Sri Lanka, it seemed like a leap forward in combatting the disease was on the cards. The World Health Organisation are expected in the country next week to examine the new breed, called ?Topomiya?, that likes to eat the larvae of the dengue spreading ?Aedes Aegypti? mosquito. But unfortunately, Topomiya seems to have ?disappeared?.

The jungle area where Topomiya was discovered has reportedly been burnt, and the mosquito is nowhere to be found. Entomologists are now struggling to find it again before the WHO arrive.

Premier Dengue Centre facing crisis with staff shortage

The lack of junior doctors is likely to toll the death knell for the Dengue Centre at the Negombo General Hospital, from which a large number of critically-ill patients have been able to walk out after treatment, since its opening on June 16. Medical staffing has reached crisis level at Negombo?s ?Centre for Clinical Management of Dengue and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever? the Sunday Times understands, work being barely managed with only six junior doctors.

For round-the-clock management of dengue patients near death?s door, at least three junior doctors need to be available all the time, working on a shift basis. This would entail a minimum requirement of 12 junior doctors, it is learnt. Currently, however, there are only six, with that number expected to drop to four in about two weeks and three in about a month, leaving the centre in deep trouble. In about three months, two more of the three doctors may leave for post-graduate studies, with only one being left at the centre. Assigning doctors to the centre at that time would be futile because dengue management training is arduous and the centre may have to be closed, the Sunday Times understands.

Unfortunately, the troubles of the Negombo Dengue Centre come in the wake of the dengue deaths rising to 60 elsewhere in the country, in the first eight months of this year (2013). Since its opening on June 16, the centre has been able to save the lives of 250 very-ill patients, both adults and children within a short span of 2? months. Some of these cases with complications had been transferred to the centre from private hospitals in Colombo, providing ample proof about its successful management of patients.
